It's Lynn's fault.Lynn and my nieces. See, over a year ago when I was in Richmond for my father's funeral, Sparky and I were hit on several fronts that we really needed to get on facebook. After much badgering, we both relented.

Sadly it got worse from there. The games. Ah, the games. So now I officialy spend Way Too much Time on facebook and not nearly enough on LJ. I promise I will try to pay attention to LJ, because I know there are some here who have not joined the lemming parade.

I also have to change my LJ style. It really is shockingly garish... no subtlety at all to the red and blue and purple trimmings.

So, after weeks of denying that moving Leno to 10:00 was a big bad mistake, NBC has finally decided to continue to deny it was a mistake while at the same time admitting that the rumours about moving him back to 11:30 are true. But, of course, it's the affiliates' fault, not NBC's.

Since about mid-October I have been working on an audio play conceived and written by my friend Vince Stadon and voiced by many others (including myself and Sparky, among others). My job has been putting it together, assembling SFX, backgrounds, and music to create an aural cinematic masterpiece. Or at least something that doesn't sound like it was put together with duct tape and baling wire. To preserve my sanity fter the first episode was copmpleted, I have help for the gathering process.

The result is The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Stalking Death, a lighter look at the World's (and Time's) Greatest Consulting Detective. Part 1 of the four part series is up now, with subsequent episodes due out every week (hopefully... I'm still up to my elbows in episode 3).

Check it out. Listen while you put the tree up tomorrow. Nothing like murder creepy arachnids to make a Merry Christmas.

Ahhh, finally. First snow of the season has begun. Ok, it started a few hours ago, but we're up to about 4" so far.

By March it'll be old, but for now... woohoo!

Thanks for your well wishes and prayers, all. Tonight I lifted the Glenlivet with my brother and sister while they were on the phone.

..this evening, not while you're working. Tonight, I will pour a glass of my best scotch (Glenfiddich) and raise a glass in toast to a great man, my father, who passed this morning. At 87 years old, as my friend Vince says, that's a lot of innings. He lived them well.

To be blunt, my father is dying. He developed a hematoma of the right parietal lobe two weeks ago Sunday. He was in ICU for a few days, and then in recovery, and the plan was to send hom to rehab soon.

This morning, he didn't remember my mother, didn't know where he was, and they determine that he had a massive stroke on the other side of the brain. He is now unconscious and will not recover. Could be a day, could be a week.

I guess the best way to describe my mood is sad, but not distraught. He's had a long, fulfilling life, at 87. No unfinished business, and, I suspect, few regrets. He was a good, well respected man, and a good father. I'll miss him.

I also don't think it's quite sunk in yet...

Also, I came within inches of hitting a moose with my car. Inches. My heart still racing, though the shot of Jack has helped. Not my fault it was just standing there on the bridge in the middle of th road, And as I slammed on brakes and swerved, it just slowly turned its head and looked at me, with the "what are YOU doing here at 1AM" look on his face. I frantically flashed my brights at the car up the road so he'd get an idea that he should slow down and NOT hit the moose. he didn't. hit the moose, I mean.

As part of it's unveiling of the new BBCAmerica HD next week, BBCA will be showing the new 5-part Torchwood story that just aired on BBC1 last week. Because we have no patience, Sparky and I downloaded and watched it. we watched the final two episodes tonight.

Watch it. You have to watch it. Even if you didn't really care for the darkness of the first two seasons of Torchwood, watching this five-part story is a must. it one one of the best things Russell T Davies has written to date.

It amuses me to read all the comments decrying the conversion of the SciFi channel to "SyFy"

Yes, it is probably going to go down as one of the dumbes rebranding stratgies in TV history (the main reason, they almost admitted, is money: they can own a trademark on "SyFy," not on "SciFi"), but what amuses me about the comments is the cries of despair that it means the END of the SciFi channel as we knew.

Uh, folks, the SciFi channel as we knew it ended about 5 years ago, when NBC Universal took it over and decided they didn't want to have a station that only appealed to pimply boys and men of stunted social skills, so they killed the better SF oriented shows in order to appeal to women. Ignoring the fact that plenty of women and articulate adult males were already rife in their audience.

So I see the change to a name to be not a sign of the station's change, but an admission of their failure (or unwillingness) to provide the intelligent, thought-provoking content that makes up real science fiction.

Wrestling on a science fiction/fantasy channel? Really?

the time to drive my parents from maine to Virginia approaches, so the Midnight Tree Bandit will be in town for two days, Sunday and Monday, Aug 2-3. Sadly, the Sparky will not be along with. Anyway, will be available for lunch, dinner, whatevah!
